Having a child with a chronic illness has opened my eyes to our wonderful world and the possibilities that a little bit of encouragement can do to ignite the fire and the desire of a sick or discouraged person to keep up the fight and be happy.

I have decided that instead of being subject to the depression that comes with watching a loved one in pain, I will be a motivator instead. I will help to bring out that smile and a sense of purpose and the desire to keep up the fight using words of encouragement and inspiration.

With this site, I will put my thoughts into words in form of inspirational messages while I continue to advocate for a cure for the deadly sickle cell disease and together with my son and other Warriors and Advocates out there, we will overcome in this beautiful world.

Alvin's Sickle Cell Battles

Alvin is a sickle cell warrior and advocate.

His sickle cell diagnosis was made shortly after birth and he has struggled with pain, blood transfusions and hospital stays throughout the eight years of his life and coupled with his asthma and lots of medications he has had a lot of unpleasant memories. Alvin has experienced acute chest syndromes. A lot of visits to the ICU and he has had an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant all thanks to the deadly sickle cell disease.

Bone Marrow Transplant is the known cure for sickle cell disease at this time and the success rate is not 100 percent. You either try again if the transplant does not work the first time or live with the pain which could eventually lead to more fatal outcomes.  Alvin is courageously battling this horrible disease and this is a battle he is determined to win. Alvin is our superhero and is out to defeat the sickle cell disease and Alvin believes that with God, all things are possible.

There are millions of children in the world suffering from sickle cell disease. We are creating awareness to this deadly disease. At the same time we need to reach out for more funding into research needed to find a better cure for this deadly disease. Gene therapy is underway and we pray to God that it is the cure we have been waiting for and that it is economical for everyone to take advantage of.

TIPS ON STAYING HEALTHY DURING LONG HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS

From my experience while my son was on admission in the hospital for his first Bone Marrow Transplant, I will give caregivers like parents who have to be with the children all the time some tips on what to do to keep the body and spirit alive and healthy.
1. Do a lot of stretches everyday. You can wake up pretty early before your youngster wakes up and needs more attention.
2. Yoga is a good way to exercise without making too much noise to disturb other patients.
3. You can take a early morning walk before your youngster wakes up but make sure to let the nurses know approximately how long you will be away.
4. Read a book of inspiration like the bible to keep your spirit in the right direction.
5. Stay positive, be optimistic and do not let the present situation wear you down.
6. Pray to your God.
7. Move around. Keep those muscles moving. You can take small walks back and forth in the room.
8. Get a Jump rope and skip all the stress away.
9. Be sure to eat and don't eat a lot of junk food because you are in the hospital. Eat healthy.
10. Take time to sleep. You need all the strength to take care of your sick child.

MAKE HOSPITAL VISITS FUN

Hospital Visits can be made interesting by engaging in a lot of fun things. In our society of developing technologies, video games would be the first thing that comes to mind. Getting your child an affordable video game helps in taking his or her mind off the current situation of pain and discomfort. There are also lots of family games like bingo in the app store. Board games is another form of diversion that families can enjoy together while visiting the hospital. A lot of hospitals have games and fun things to make hospital visits more pleasant. Toys and games at the hospitals are usually sanitized to control the spread of diseases. So when next you are at the hospital, ask where you can get games to keep you busy.

MAINTAINING FAMILY TIME

There is a popular saying that says "A family that prays together stay together". Having family time helps the family stay connected and spending time together makes for a stronger family tie. Family time is especially important when you have a sick child. Creating time to be together, sharing, laughing, and having fun can reinforce the passion of the sick child to keep fighting knowing that the other family members are there supporting with love and affection.

- Briefly about Sickle Cell: A struggle that gave me my inspiration -

Data and statistics from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), shows that about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American child is born with Sickle Cell Disease (SDC). About 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American child also carries the disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Sickle cell anemia is caused by a mutation in the gene that tells your body to make hemoglobin — the red, iron-rich compound that gives blood its red color. Hemoglobin allows red blood cells to carry oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. In sickle cell anemia, the abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky and misshapen”.
Sickle cell Anemia could lead to episodes of pain, Hand-foot syndrome, frequent infections, delayed growth, vision problems and stroke among others. It could also lead to an untimely death.

OUT AND ABOUT SICKLE CELL DISEASE

The need for more Research

Children with sickle cell disease go through a lot of chronic pain. They are very prone to infections which leads to lots of health problems which tends to shorten their life span. The life expectancy for individuals with sickle cell disease has increased with recent medications like hydroxyurea which is a Chemotherapy, and today a lot of people living with Sickle Cell live into their 40s and even longer.
Research into finding a solution to the Sickle cell battle has been a major factor in this aspect. Bone Marrow Transplant is the cure available at this time but it is a very aggressive cure with the rigorous chemotherapy and radiation involved. More research is therefore needed to find a very effective and less brutal cure.

Research Funding

Funding is very important in an efforts to conduct research to develop low-cost or affordable treatments to help the millions of children living with this disease.
Although treatments exist, they are not readily available to many especially in developing countries where we have majority of the children living with the sickle cell disease.

The need for affordable cure

Finding a cure is of paramount importance but also of great importance is the necessity to come up with a cure that will be available and affordable to the millions that are out there looking to live a pain less life.

Majority of the people living with the Sickle Cell disease are in developing countries where the standard of living is low. A lot of these people barely have enough to survive so the ability to come up with a cure that would not add more burden to them would go a long way in creating a beautiful world for the Sickle Cell Warriors out there.

Blood donations helps millions of people stay alive.
Blood donation involves having ones blood drawn voluntarily for the use of transfusions which helps to save millions of lives. The availability of blood depends on people who are willing to donate their blood and every single unit of blood collected is tested to make sure it is safe for use.
The Red Cross is one of the biggest Organization whose mission is to collect and make blood available for people in need.
