The need for more Research

Children with sickle cell disease experience chronic pain. They are very prone to infections, which lead to many health problems and tend to shorten their life span. The life expectancy for individuals with sickle cell disease has increased with recent medications like hydroxyurea, which is a chemotherapy, and today a lot of people living with Sickle Cell live into their 40s and even longer.

Research into finding a solution to the Sickle cell battle has been a major factor in this aspect. Bone Marrow Transplant is the cure available at this time, but it is a very aggressive cure with the rigorous chemotherapy and radiation involved. More research is therefore needed to find a very effective and less brutal cure.
